The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
So this was slow to get started. I only kept reading because a friend said it was her most favourite book and I’ve read some of her writing and it’s great. So I figured she knew what she was talking about.
At first there seemed like there were too many storylines as well. I kept forgetting who the fuck was who. But once all the storylines were in place and I realised they are all going to meet up, it’s really hard to slow down to make the book last!
Great ending as well. Lovely gothic horror element to it. Makes it quite magical.
So, yep, interesting pacing. Really lovely writing. The descriptions were brief but rich at the same time. And the characters were all truly observed in all their utterly fucked up humanness.
I know this will be a book I think about a lot. I may even re-read it.
